I guess, I could translate “tsarevna” as “princess” because technically it’s the same thing, but since tsarevna is the title for a Russian princess I decided to keep everything more authentic.
I don’t know the story behind this editorial, but some of the styling elements reminded me of a fairy-tale by Alexander Pushkin. One of the characters was a sea tsarevna that would appear as a swan (nothing to do with the Swan lake, by the way). The story then inspired an opera written by Rimsky-Korsakov. The costumes and decorations for the opera were designed by a Russian artist, Mikhail Vrubel and it is one of his paintings that somehow linked my childhood memories of the image to these photos from the March issue of Russian Vogue 2008.

There is something very sea-inspired about the dresses Natalia wears in this editorial, and the way she wears them - her hairstyle certain makes me think of how a mermaid would look with her salt-water soaked hair dried. Such beautiful images, as always - thank-you for sharing these :)

wow, the makeup in this shoot is incredible, and i love that she's wearing a crown or headpiece in nearly every picture. my favorite crown is the one in the second picture--so adorable.

Вау! Какие фотографии!
ReplyDeleteЯ тоже люблю Врубеля:-) Действительно 2ая фотография похожа на Царену-Лебедь, а последняя - на Морскую Царевну (тоже его картина...)
